The Municipality of Apollonion
The area of the Municipality of Apollonion holds the 1/3 of the island. It includes all the big south valley, a big and fertile champaign, high mountains under the centre of the island, the calm south-east coasts of the island, the peninsula and the Lefkata cape with its white wild rocks and finally the steep west coasts which form the best beaches of the island. The area is full of waters, luxuriant vegetation, beautiful forests, canyons and caves.
The history of the Municipality:
According to the evidence that came up after systematic archaeological excavations of Dorpfeld, the first inhabitants appear in the area around 6000b.C. (evidence from caves and Lefkata Cape). Ever since the human presence is proved by the findings of Dorpfeld in the Lefkata Cape, the devotional cave in Hortata village, the excavations in St.John in Vournikas village where an ancient temple dedicated to the Unknown God was found, as well as the findings of the Greek and Roman era in the villages Athani, Marantohori, Ponti, Nikoli, Sivros and recent Byzantine findings in the village Dragano in the location Santa Pelagia. The constant movements of people from South Italy, Calabria, Peloponissos, Central Greece, Cefalonia and Crete have created today 's population.
The Municipality of Apollonion with Vassiliki as its capital today has 3274 inhabitants, 13 communal provinces and 20 dorps:
